People who have trained with me will have sometimes heard me speak about self preservation rather than self defense. This is not an accident. For me, self preservation is bigger, and more important, than self defense. This is because, while self defense focuses on our ability to protect ourselves against a violent confrontation, self preservation takes a wider view on how we can look after ourselves in all areas of our lives. For me, the most important rules for self preservation are:

  1. Know how to defend yourself.
  2. Eat healthy and stay fit.
  3. Understand your values and live them.
  4. Be present.
  5. Have fun and enjoy life.
